The Tarantula nebula is also known as 30 Doradus, or NGC 2070. It is an extremely luminous non-stellar object located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The LMC is a dwarf galaxy closest to our own galaxy and visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Supernova 1987A occurred in the outskirts of the Tarantula nebula.
