The Orion nebula is also known as M42 and NGC 1976 and is situated in the constellation Orion. This nebula is visible with the naked eye as the middle "star" in the sword of Orion, which are the three stars located south of Orion's Belt. It is part of a much larger nebula that is known as the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. The reflection nebula at the top of the photo is NGC 1977 and is known as the Running Man nebula. The Orion nebula is a region of masssive star formation and is at a distance of approximately 1400 light years and is about 24 light years across.
