M82 (also known as NGC 3034, Cigar Galaxy) is a starburst galaxy about 12 million light-years away in the constellation Ursa Major. M82 is five times as bright as the whole Milky Way. M82 has an exceptionally high rate of star formation in the starburst core. This galaxy belongs to a group of galaxies that also includes M81. Both are beautiful objects to see in a telescope. With a wide enough field of view, M81 and M82 can be seen together in the eyepiece.
